What is World Vegetarian Day?
First set up by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977, World Vegetarian Day takes place on October 1st each year and exists to shine a light on the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. It’s also designed to show people that vegetarian alternatives are an option even if you haven’t sworn off meat. Eating more plant-based meals can be good for your health, good for the planet and good for animals too.
At Greene King, we love how food brings people together, and we believe there’s room at the table for everyone. Meat-eaters, flexitarians and full-time veggies alike. So whether you’re in it for your health, the environment or simply because you love great food, World Vegetarian Day is the perfect excuse to try something new.

Why go meat-free?
Choosing a vegetarian meal isn't just about what's on your plate. It’s about the positive impact you can have with each bite. According to the Vegetarian Society, choosing plant-based dishes can contribute to better health, a healthier planet and improved animal welfare:
- Health — A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains can lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. It's also a great way to maintain a healthy weight and boost overall wellbeing.
- Environmental — Reducing meat consumption helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions, conserves water and reduces deforestation. By choosing plant-based options, you're taking a step towards a more sustainable future.
- Animals — Embracing vegetarian meals supports the ethical treatment of animals by reducing demand for animal farming and promoting compassionate choices.
